News update: In addition to the below, there is a new technique developed in Melbourne which is a new way to attach a full denture to the gums but without using implants. It uses a titanium frame screwed to the bone using tiny screws. It's a better alternative because it does away with the need to drill large holes and the chewing forces are spread over a larger area. Contact me for more information on the exciting new technology.
Implants are probably the most confusing topic for patients to understand. Implants are used for a variety of purposes which leads to confusion for the patient. They are used for permanently fixed:
They are also commonly used to attach a removable full lower denture. The denture attaches to the implant in a way similar to a press stud.
I urge patients to be extremely cautious if they are thinking about getting implants or the so called "All on Four". This is not to say they don't have a place in dentistry. They do. But implants are not magic and they can fail. Implants are high maintenance. When the patient gets old and they can't look after their implants, they are more at risk of failure. This can be catastrophic if the bone has been removed to make room for implants.
A lot of people have dentures that do not fit well or are poorly made. Often the patient is told "you have a difficult mouth" or "you just have to get used to them". Then the patient is told implants will fix their problems. The chances are you don't have to have implants.
The solution to poorly fitting dentures could be as simple as having the existing dentures relined or having a new set made. You should start with the simplest, most non-invasive, cost effective solution first. Implants are a great solution if nothing else works. I can organise to have them placed in your mouth if you wish. Contact me for a consultation to discuss your needs.
